Wind energy breaks a new record in Spain

Spain continues to advance in the use of renewable energy, achieving a new record in electricity generation in 2020.

During 2020, technologies renewable energy (wind, solar, hydraulic...) reached produce the 43.6% of all the electricity in Spain and has registered its participation in the set of generation facilities since records of this data have been available, according to Red Eléctrica de España.

The technology wind This year it has been the renewable energy with the greatest presence, reaching 21.7% of total electricity. Nuclear energy remains ahead with 22.2% of the total, while in the following positions are combined cycle plants, hydraulic energy and photovoltaic solar energy (6.1%). Red Eléctrica de España highlights that photovoltaic solar energy registered an interannual increase of 65.9% this year.

The maximum share of green and clean energy production in 2020 is mainly due to the favorable weather conditions to greater employment of wind and sun as natural fuels and the increase in renewable power installed in the Spanish generation park. For this reason, the participation of renewable energies in the total electricity generation in Spain in 2020 has increased, with a 6% higher than that of 2019. So far, the year with the greatest weight in terms of renewable energy in the electricity sector Spanish was 2014.

The increase in the production of renewables "has pushed 2020 will also be the year with the highest production free of CO2 emissions equivalent since there are records (2007)", indicates Red Eléctrica de España.

The advance of renewable energies has contrasted with the rapid decline in electricity production in plants that use coal as their main fuel. This decrease is justified by the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.
