The United Nations Program for Sustainable Development establishes 17 objectives, among which is ensure access to affordable, safe, sustainable and modern energy for all, In short, guarantee universal access to energy. To achieve this objective, it is necessary to improve energy performance and increase the use of renewable sources.
The European Union, one of the main promoters of the different treaties on this matter, has promoted the approval of laws with the aim of reducing the devastating consequences of a development not respectful of the environment. The energy chapter is one of the fundamental pillars of sustainable development policies. For this reason, the European Union approved Directive 2010/31/EU, which requires member states to adopt legal provisions to guarantee almost zero energy consumption in buildings. In this way, the amount of energy required will have to be very low and must be mostly covered by renewable energy, preferably produced on site or in the environment. The implementation schedule of these measures has two key dates: the December 31, 2018 for application in public buildings, and December 31, 2020 for all new buildings. Existing buildings undergoing renovation will also be affected by the Directive.
