Develop from strengths (how to be a good tailor)

Throughout my work experience, I have been led and have led people. I have also been lucky enough to accompany numerous leaders on their path to managing a human team. So, in this post I want to tell you a vision and conclusion which I have arrived at in the form of a metaphor.

Every leader has to be a good tailor…And you will think, what does leadership have to do with making a suit? Well, come with me and let me tell you.

Why does every leader have to be a good tailor?

When at work we assume the role of accompany people on the road of our organization, we have to invest time in getting to know each person deeply and honestly, that is, we have to take measurements, carefully and in detail

This will be the first step to observe your talent and your strengths and training him through them will make him grow within the organization in a fluid and easy way, so the suit that we help him make will fit him perfectly.

how to be a good tailor

There are leaders who, on the contrary, lead from what fits them, which is what they connect with when they are managing a team. What I call develop by similarity.

The consequences of this people management is that only those people who have behaviors or values similar to yours and that will make the team composed of many same profiles

So continuing with the tailor's metaphor, it will be having the same suit for the entire team and the team. You won't be able to stand out at all.

Because leading by wearing a suit that is not tailored will cause you to lose the talent of your organization since, or people will be frustrated and unmotivated trying to fit a profile that doesn't help them grow or people will go look for a tailor who will make them shine with their suit, or who knows, maybe they will make their own

Here I leave you some strategies to get to know your collaborators better (and take their measurements well)

  1. Get to know yourself first. Self-knowledge is the starting point of any leadership.
  2. Schedule a time Get to know your collaborators. The time you invest today will be the time you earn tomorrow.
  3. Ask questions beyond work, meet the person behind the professional. You don't have to go into depth, but at least know what your lifestyle and personal motivations are.
  4. Apply different methodologies mutual knowledge. It will make knowledge easier, it will give you individual strengths, and it will be a very didactic learning experience. Knowing the behavior and conduct of your collaborators will help you identify what they contribute to the organization naturally and why you need them on your team.
  5. Do everything the way honest and sincere because that will make trust the basis of your work and your relationship.

Advantages of knowing your collaborators better

  1. You develop them from what you have observed them doing best.
  2. By fitting into their suit they can shine individually and recognize the brightness of their companions, generating healthier relationships.
  3. All the time you invest in them generates a honest and strong relationship. They will not want to leave the company and they will speak highly of it, it is the best publicity you can have.
  4. By feeling that the organization counts on them for everything they contribute and for having a unique suit They work in a much more motivated way and that makes productivity increase naturally.
  5. When you invest time in accompanying them on the path of growth based on their strengths, you usually generate a sense of belonging so you retain talent in a natural way.
  6. You grow as your team grows and you help them shine.

Being a good tailor is complex, just like being a good leader, it requires time and effort. But the result is incredible because you see grow your team and your organization exponentially.
