The MEPs want maximum energy efficiency in the buildings of the European Union in the year 2050 and, to this end, they are committed to renovating buildings to reduce their consumption. The plenary session held last week endorsed the agreement reached in December between the negotiators of the European Parliament and the Council.
The new legislation obliges member states to develop long-term national strategies for the renovation of both public and private buildings, with the aim of cutting their volume of polluting emissions between 80% and 85% in relation to the 1990 level.
The text passed with 546 votes in favor, 35 against and 96 abstentions.
