Latin American countries are not yet prepared for the energy transition
Most Latin American countries are still not well prepared to face the energy transition, according to a report published by the World Economic Forum that analyzes 114 countries, including several Latin American countries.
El análisis “Promover una transición energética efectiva” fue publicado en el marco del Foro Económico Mundial sobre América Latina, que se celebra hasta el jueves en Sao Paulo.
According to this assessment, which classifies countries based on the current state of their energy systems and their level of structural preparation to adapt to future energy needs, Latin America must improve in several areas, such as innovation, capital development human resources, the security of investments and the effectiveness of the institutional framework.
The report examines the performance of countries' current energy systems under three dimensions: energy access and security; environmental sustainability of the system; and potential for inclusive economic growth and development. Likewise, it analyzes to what extent there are conditions that facilitate a transition towards a low CO2 emissions system.
Scandinavian and Western European countries top the Energy Transition Index, with Sweden, Norway and Switzerland at the top, while the United Kingdom (7) and France (9) are the only G7 economies to rank within the top ten first places. In the Latin American region, those that show the best performances are Uruguay, which ranks 13th, Costa Rica (20th), Chile (24th) and Mexico (28th).
