The main characteristic of Open BIM technology is that it is based on the use of standard open data exchange formats and Public Industry Foundation Class (IFC) type.
This format was created by buildingSMART in the late 90s and registered as an international standard by the International Standardization Organization in 2013. Subsequently, this standard has been adapted as Euronorma and has been in force in Spain since 2017 as UNE-EN ISO 16739:2016

Thanks to this type of exchange files, the different characteristics of the project can be resolved (installation of air conditioning, structure, ventilation, etc.) regardless of the software used for it. IFC type data files do not depend on the design tools or applications used, thus ensuring the durability of the work carried out. They can be interpreted and generated by those compatible applications that are part of the BIM software and will ultimately be part of the BIM project.
