Europe fails in energy efficiency

The agreement on energy efficiency allows waste and turns a deaf ear to energy poverty. After a year and a half of negotiations, European representatives have failed to live up to their climate responsibility.
On June 19, the last negotiating session of the European trilogue on the new energy efficiency directive and the Governance Regulations. At the end of the last negotiation session, representatives of the Council, the European Parliament and the European Commission have managed to agree on a common objective, and establish the provisions of the new Energy Efficiency Directive for 2030.

The main points agreed upon in yesterday afternoon's session were the following:

  • A European target of 32.5% of energy efficiency by 2030. A target that is not legally binding for Member States.
  • An annual savings of 0.8%. In this case binding, but clearly insufficient.
