The commitment to self-consumption electric would have a great impact on the lives of Spanish people. It would also create a problem that is difficult to solve. Today, only those people who live in isolated farms without connection to the electrical grid avoid the State charging them for producing and consuming their own energy. It is the consequence of the call sun tax.
The detractors of this measure believe that if Spain supported the solar energy self-generationThe benefits would be enormous and immediate: fewer polluting emissions, lower consumption of fossil fuels, greater efficiency in the electrical distribution network...
Besides, the electricity bill would be considerably reduced. And this is the big problem for critics of self-consumption. Half of the electricity bill that we Spaniards pay is not for our individual consumption: it is partly used to cover the tariff deficit with the electricity companies.
It also serves to pay for the nuclear moratorium, renewable energy subsidies or the energy supply to the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands. If citizens paid less thanks to self-consumption, Spain would have to devise another way to cover these expenses.
