Mallorca's renewable green hydrogen ecosystem: Green Hysland

Green Hysland green hydrogen project in Mallorca

Spain has become the first country to receive financing from the European Union and the Balearic Islands have been chosen to carry out the project Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU). The development of this project will begin in 2021 and its estimated duration will be until 2025.

Thanks to this, Spain will become eThe first country in the Mediterranean to create a green hydrogen ecosystem, to generate, distribute and use over 300 tons of green hydrogen from solar energy.

Green Hysland is made up of a total of 30 partners from 11 different countries, both belonging to the European Union and outside. The project coordinator is Enagás, promoted by Acciona, Cemex and Redexis. In addition, some universities from the Balearic Islands and La Laguna are also present.

This project has been based on the roadmap of the Government of Spain "Hydrogen Roadmap: a commitment to renewable hydrogen" which has the objective of reaching 4 gigawatts of production capacity by 2030 and mobilizing a total estimated investment of 8.9 billion euros.

Objective of the project

The objective of this project is reduce CO2 emissions in Mallorca, in addition to carrying out projects, studies and business models to be able to replicate this project in other places in the European Union.

Green hydrogen will have a wide variety of applications, prioritizing the direct consumption of renewable hydrogen, such as the supply of fuel to fleets of buses or rental vehicles.

The possibility is raised that this green hydrogen will be injected into the island's gas pipeline network through a Guarantee of Origin System, which will allow decarbonize the gas supply.

Importance of the project

This green hydrogen project offers many benefits for everyone, the main one being that It does not emit CO2 and therefore barely pollutes the air when used. That is why it is offered as solution to decarbonize industrial processes and that represents a great advance to reduce carbon emissions.

One of the main objectives of the European Union is to cpursue carbon neutrality by 2050 and work towards zero pollution, embodied in the Paris Agreement.

The rapid decline in the costs of renewable energy, technological advances and the urgency to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions open up new possibilities, as has been Green Hysland.
