Energy efficiency, the main challenge of the Spanish energy model

This was stated by Pedro Linares, director of the BP Chair of Energy and Sustainability, in the presentation of the conclusions of the 2018 Report carried out by this organization. According to the study, the Spanish energy system has worsened in all energy sustainability indicators and should focus much more on energy efficiency.
He report from the BP Chair of Energy and Sustainability points out that in 2017 (latest data available for the set of items analyzed in the study) the Spanish energy sector consumed 6.3 exajoules (EJ) of primary energy and emitted, once exports were discounted, 300 million tons (Mt) of CO2, generating an added value (without discounting external costs) of 48,380 million euros (corresponding approximately to 3.7% of GDP).
According to this analysis, in 2017 the Spanish energy system worsened in all energy sustainability indicators. Energy demand continued to increase (3.2% in primary energy and 1.4% in final energy) and although energy intensity reduced, we are still above the average for our environment. Likewise, the energy bill and CO2 emissions increased.
