The new year is approaching and we are all starting to have resolutions for this new 2021 and more in our heads, having passed the “wonderful” year we have had.
Quitting smoking, joining the gym or losing weight are usually in the top five of most people, but why don't we add improving our cybersecurity to that list?
Currently our presence on the Internet increases every day, we post photos with our dog, having pizza for dinner, we give our opinions on our programs on Twitter or we tell on Facebook that we have gone to the supermarket and that tomatoes were on sale. Getting hold of a person's sensitive information is very easy and does not require much effort if we do not keep our cybersecurity in mind, not only because of what we "upload" to the network, but also because of the programs, apps or emails that we unconsciously open. without regard.
For all these reasons, before ending this “wonderful” year, I am going to leave you some tips to assimilate them and apply them in the new year that is presented to us as if they were the 10 commandments, well, there will be 5.
Cyber-Commandments 2021
Commandment number 1 – You will deactivate geolocation in all photos, even posture ones.
Posturing on social networks is very good, but if you have the geolocation option activated in the photos, they can locate you and know where you are thanks to the GPS coordinates.
Commandment number 2 – You will make an effort to read the fine print before installing a program or application.
We are all rushing through this life, but they could be offering you a contract with the devil and you, so happily, give it your thumb to accept.
Commandment number 3 – You will not open emails from unknown users no matter how much you like kitten videos or how many Mercadona gift vouchers they give you.
Cyber blackmail (phishing) is the order of the day, so we must be careful with what things we download to our device and what emails we open since it can come infected with ransomware (bad evil program) and block our device or steal sensitive information for then ask us for a ransom $$. My advice, never download anything from strange pages or open email attachments from unknown people, directly mark them as spam or block them.
Commandment number 4 – You will not connect to public networks without a password no matter how low your data is.
We have all suffered an anxiety attack at some point when we see that on the 8th of the month we have no data left and we wander around bars and libraries in search of Wi-Fi, but be careful!! An open network without a password can be the door to more than one headache, as I told you. here
Commandment number 5 – You will change your password frequently and stop using one for everything
As I already said in this post, there is an astonishing number of people who use passwords with zero security, the top included 123456, its cousin 123456789 and password among others, so, for this year, you should try to generate a laborious password and not the same one for everything because if not As I said in that post, our security is on par with the padlock on a children's piggy bank in an oriental bazaar.
Surely more than one of you has identified with some of the commandments and above all I hope that this coming year you will put them into practice because as the saying goes, prevention is better than cure.
