HFO gases and hydronic HVAC systems, Carrier's commitment to reducing CO2 emissions

The new Regulation on Fluorinated Gases, which came into force on January 1, 2015, includes ambitious objectives to reduce the amount of hydrocarbons (HFC) sold in the EU, achieving, in 2030, a reduction of 79% on the basis established upon its entry into force. In achieving this ambitious reduction, the Regulation legislates on various sectors, including domestic, commercial and industrial refrigeration, transport, cooling and heating for comfort in buildings and industrial process cooling. The response of Carrier to this legislation is the combination of HFO gases with hydronic HVAC systems.

In the last two sectors, one of the HFCs widely used today is R134a, a refrigerant that does not damage the ozone layer, but has a greenhouse effect (PCA-GWP value 1300 - AR2 evaluation - or 1430 - AR4 evaluation - ). R134a is used as a refrigerant in chillers and heat pumps with a thermal capacity above 200-300 kW, associated with screw and centrifugal compression technologies. A very important market whose evolution will be key to reducing CO2 emissions.
