The giant that knows everything about us, Google, has donated the amount of $350,000 to Python Software Foundation (PSF) to support the development of CPython (Core Python), improve foundational tools, and strengthen the security of the Python package ecosystem.
PSF is a non-profit organization that supports programming language, as we can read on their website:
“The mission of the Python Software Foundation is to promote, protect, and advance the Python programming language, and to support and facilitate the growth of a diverse, international community of Python programmers.”
Since Google uses Python for many of its main products and services, and in particular it is extremely important for Google Cloud, it is not surprising that it has supported the development of tools to improve security.
What projects will benefit?
Three projects will benefit from the donation of Google Cloud, which would include:
- Malware detection for PyPI (Python Package Index).
- Improvements to core Python services and tools.
- A resident CPython developer for 2021, who will work full time assisting in the development of the CPython project, prioritizing maintenance and resolving backlogs.
He has also made a donation in 'kind' from Google Cloud infrastructure to the foundation. This helps support the critical infrastructure that the PSF operates, including the python package index.
Google renewed its sponsorship of PSF last year, already the tenth consecutive year and as indicated in its release, “we are proud to become the organization's first 'Visionary' sponsor.”
Google makes it clear that it firmly believes in Python, so supporting the PSF will help ensure that Python has a great future for many years to come.
