Lead the Change: Triple Renewable Energy Worldwide by 2030

Renewable energy

In a world increasingly committed to sustainability and the energy transition, the goal of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030 is not only a challenge, but an extraordinary opportunity to transform our future. This was emphasized by Joan Groizard, Spain's Secretary of State for Energy, during his speech at the annual meeting of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), held in Abu Dhabi.

A Commitment Shared by the International Community

IRENA leads the monitoring of the Dubai Consensus, an agreement adopted at the COP28 Climate Summit, which sets two crucial goals: tripling global renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency improvements by 2030. Groizard stressed that rather than seeing these goals as obstacles, we should focus on the immense opportunities they offer for developing innovative technologies, creating green jobs, and strengthening energy security.

In Spain's case, 2023 marked a historic milestone: renewable energy generated 56% of the country's electricity, an unprecedented figure that positions the country as a leader in the global energy transition. This achievement not only highlights Spain's renewable energy potential but also the importance of ambitious and well-implemented public policies.

Climate Change and Social Justice: Global Priorities

The fight against climate change must go hand in hand with social justice and the eradication of energy poverty, Groizard stated, expressing Spain's support for Brazil, the host country of the upcoming COP30 Climate Summit. These priorities, shared by both nations, advocate for a just transition that leaves no one behind, an essential approach to ensuring inclusive and equitable energy solutions.

An Urgent Call to Action Against Global Warming

The IRENA meeting could not come at a more crucial time. The scientific community has confirmed that 2024 was the warmest year on record, with the global average temperature rising for the first time above 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels. This alarming figure, a reminder of the limit set by the 2015 Paris Agreement, highlights the urgency of redoubling efforts in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

A Reflection for the Future

From the Professional Master in Renewable Energies, Smart Grids and Electric Mobility We want to highlight the importance of training professionals capable of leading this transformation. The goals set for 2030 require experts who understand the technical, economic, and social complexity of renewable energy, but who are also committed to sustainable and inclusive development.

Today more than ever, the challenge of tripling renewable energy must be seen as an opportunity to build a cleaner, fairer, and more resilient future.
