Where did you get my data from?

The digital society and the increasingly complex evolution of information technologies present many positive aspects for both individuals and agents in the private and public sectors. However, the achievement of these advantages, which are generally promoted by private companies for the obtaining an economic benefit, are still the result of an existing imbalance between business interest or, if you prefer, between general economic interest and the protection of privacy of the people receiving the services of the digital society.

Where did you get my personal data from?

This imbalance is allowed by the legislator and by the different European control authorities due to the enormous complexity involved in weighing the aforementioned interests and, in turn, taking into account that an excessively protectionist regulation for natural persons would prohibit the majority of new services and would mean an avalanche of legal obstacles that would act to the detriment of technological development in the digital field.

Correct use of our personal data

In this scenario in which we are already fully immersed, the great challenge of our society is increase awareness about the exercise of privacy:

  • That those interested know the value of our personal data, the positive and negative consequences that facilitating them has for us and for third parties, as well as the rights we have and how we can exercise them.
  • Let us get involved in understand how the new services work, especially the free ones.
  • Let us normalize the possibility of file complaints when we detect that a company or public entity is doing a misuse of our data.

On the other hand, on the part of those responsible for the treatment, that is, those who process personal data, the great challenge is to find and apply simple and intuitive formulas that contribute to facilitating this awareness process and that they effectively implement mechanisms that guarantee privacy by default and by design.

The challenge is to prevent us, surprised and confused, from having to ask ourselves again. “Where did you get my personal information?” and, if we do, let us know how to respond and what actions to take to regain control of our privacy.
