Interprofessional Minimum Wage

According to information published on February 7 by the State Public Employment Service, the The minimum wage published for 2024 is set at 1,134 euros..

The Interprofessional Minimum Wage (SMI) is one of the key metrics that defines a country's labor and economic landscape. In Spain's case, the SMI for 2024 has been established at 1,134 euros, marking a increase of 5% compared to the previous yearThis increase, reflected in Royal Decree 145/2024 published in the Official State Gazette (BOE), has a significant impact on millions of working people across the country.

For workers who receive this salary, The increase translates into an additional 54 euros per month, representing a significant increase in their annual income, which now amounts to 15,876 euros. This increase not only provides a direct financial relief to working people, but also has positive effects on the economy in general, as it increases the purchasing power of a significant portion of the population.

This salary increase refers to the gross salary received by employees. The 1,134 euros per month in 14 installments represents the total payroll accruals, and if the bonus payments are prorated, this represents a salary of 1,323 euros per month if distributed over 12 installments.

Increasing the minimum interprofessional wage is a vital boost for workers and the economy.

It is important to highlight that This increase also has a retroactive character, effective January 1, 2024. This means that beneficiaries will receive the increase corresponding to the months elapsed since the beginning of the year, which contributes to immediately improving their financial situation.

During the previous legislature, The Government raised the minimum interprofessional wage from 735 euros to 1,080 euros in 2023., with the increase in the minimum wage agreed for 2024, the minimum wage has increased by 54% since 2018.

The impact of the new minimum wage extends beyond the individual income of workers. Around 2.5 million people in Spain benefit directly from this increase., which represents a particularly significant potential for the country's young population due to several key aspects:

  • Improved Economic Income: For many young people entering the labor market or holding entry-level jobs, the higher minimum wage means a more substantial monthly income. This increase provides them with greater financial stability and allows them to better cover basic expenses, such as housing, food, and transportation.
  • Reducing Economic Inequality: Since young people often hold lower-wage jobs, increasing the minimum wage helps reduce the economic inequality gap. By guaranteeing a fairer and more dignified minimum wage, they are given the opportunity to enjoy a more equitable quality of life and improve their overall well-being.
  • Financial Independence: Increasing the minimum wage can help young people become more financially independent. With higher incomes, they are able to make more independent financial decisions, such as becoming independent, paying for their studies, or saving for the future.
  • Incentive for Education and Training: With higher disposable incomes, young people may be more motivated to invest in their education and further training. This can translate into greater participation in higher education programs, vocational courses, or specialized training, which in turn increases their opportunities for employment and long-term career growth.

In the words of Pepe Álvarez, general secretary of UGT,  “The rise has the face of a woman and the face of a young person, and it benefits the most.”, he said at the presentation of the increase in the SMI.

This news is well received by the general population and helps offset the high cost of living we are facing.
